Google has a new addition to its Chromebook line-up, the first ever Chromebook with a touch screen display, the brand new Chromebook Pixel. Chromebooks have always been cheap and made by other OEM’s, but the Chromebook Pixel is set to change all that.

The Pixel is the first Chromebook designed by Google and it is a premium, high end product ready to compete with Apple’s Macbook’s. The Pixel features a 2560 x 1700 touchscreen display panel with a pixel density of 239ppi. This is supposed to be the highest resolution display seen on a laptop yet. Under the hood is a third-gen Intel Core i5 processor with integrated Intel graphics, 4GB RAM and 32GB of SSD with 1 TB of Google Drive space being offered for 3 years.

The design of the Chromebook Pixel boasts of high quality engineering. The body is made of anodized aluminum alloy with all vents and screws hidden, the touchpad is made of etched glass analyzed and honed using a laser microscope, the display itself is made from Gorilla Glass used primarily on smartphones and tablets. The design is not only aesthetic but functional too, for eg, the hinge at the back not only allows you to open and close the Pixel with only a finger but also acts as a heatsink to keep the machine cool.

The Pixel runs on Google’s very own Chrome OS which might severely limit its functionality. Chrome OS cannot run Photoshop, graphic intensive games or other mainstream software yet. Google might probably release more apps to populate its Chrome store in the future, but until then there might not be many applications that will be able to make use of the powerful hardware.

All of Google’s services like YouTube, Gmail, Google Plus, Maps etc will be integrated into the OS and it comes with built-in virus protection. Also it boots and shuts down very quickly, requires almost zero maintenance like the other laptops in the Chromebook line and it stays up to date with the latest version with updates releasing every few weeks.

The Chromebook Pixel has a WiFi only and an LTE model, and will be available only in the U.S. and U.K. as of now. The price for this premium Chromebook experience is $1,299 U.S. and £1,049 U.K. What are you initial impressions of this device? Share your thoughts with us here.
