WHY SNS:
why Twitter, why Facebook?
Nevr ask why, ask WHY NOT?
I remember my first marketing session at the campus of IIM Indore. Nervous and a little worried over who’s going to be picked to answer the quick question from the gurus of marketing here.
I was attending the session from the most sought after learning auditoriums at the campus and from one of the best faculties in the industry. Our professor started the session with a simple question:
What is marketing?
All of us came up with innovative and as per our assumptions (individual assumptions, ahem!) with intelligent answers (we had done lot of reading till 2am the night before, about Branding / Strategies of Marketing / Service Marketing / Research etc… But no one had thought of looking into this simple question. What is marketing?)
Finally the professor said, “Its simple, its need” – Now whether it was creating or addressing existing need, he did not mention.
I guess by the end of our course, we figured it out ourselves.
I loved the subject & scored outstanding credentials in it simply because it had everything I wanted from a subject, from a profile / profession and to develop my ever crazed needy brain.
Working on different marketing projects with various brands over the last three years, I have read, pondered, enquired and studied scores of case studies and never stopped learning with every success and any failure. I have realised, everytime we fail to touch that nerve of the prospective consumer we do not simply get a “GO” ahead with that initiative amongst ourselves.
It’s always addressing the latent needs. It’s always, to capture the need. It’s just to ‘connect’
Marketing has so many levels to it. It has everything, right from budgeting to proposal planning, customer feedback to market response, product launch to tying it with sales numbers; it has everything bundled with it. There’s always something new to learn from it.
I guess, at times the brands too become so conscious and clear about the numbers to be achieved, the targets that need to be driven for, we at times tend to forget the pulling force behind them all. “Market response”
You might be a powerful brand, but if the market does not respond, you are through, not in the right or good way though, unfortunately. It’s that simple.
SNS today, have made it so easy for us to reach out quicker and in a much better way.
After a very recent market research through social networking sites (SNS) viral campaign that I was working on recently had a successful finish to it, I got scores of mails with appreciation on the campaigns. This was the first time I was happy Why, ‘coz the responses were from the customers, straight from the end users enjoying the benefits of the campaign giving the organization or brand that I was working with, a hit and enquiry rate of over 250% to their routine registrations.
Thanks to SNS for making life much easier.
Why did I choose, viral campaigns and why do I pool it with Social Networking?
Not because the product needed it, not because the market demanded.
I did it simply because SNS today gives you flexibility to reach out to your target specific users easily, use it wisely to understand what they need sitting at their offices or homes today and it saves lot of time.
Starbucks did it! And so many followed……….
The best part is, it seems to work for any product. Why? Simply because it adds that personal touch to users and makes them click with it. It associates them with images, colours and names to an extent that loyalty is already built up even before the product seems to be out in the marker at times.
That’s right. The new marketing mantra reads “SNS” – Social Networking Sites and with a touch of viral marketing, it’s magic all around.
A CPC aspect in Facebook would probably yield lesser output as compared to distributing free samples to users across and generating a word of mouth product review. But SNS today touches the prospects across very easily.
Product Interactions Statistical insights:
Weekly Product Interactions
Today web technology tools have contributed immensely towards making the consumer heard easily, express immediately and that saves the most important aspect for both the parties, “time”.
Twitter has become the worlds most sought after word search today. Facebook today forms a major part of our daily routine.

So how does this magic work.
What’s so special about Facebook with half of the world hooked onto it? The first catch is that, simply put, the freedom to explore, the availability of rich colours, lots of free videos, images and pictures, people just love looking and browsing through them. They always have.
Plus one gets a free preview of yet to release products, gets to see what’s next, get’s a personal touch and feel of the product without having to enquire through ‘n number of sources. With target specific ads, once gets to be at the user’s home or office to find out what he/she really wants.
Fan interactions insight:
Fans Interactions this week from All across - Countyrwise / Demographic wise
For eg. If I am looking for a particular project today to enhance my skills, I would rather talk on Linkedin than call up friends and their friends. If I want to know and keep myself updated on Art or books, I would join in with a Group online with scores of followers updating important information from all across the globe. Searching for books, dropping or placing orders with book shops for home deliveries seems to eat up most of our waiting time, so I would instead browse through Amazon for a book and order it online in a jiffy.
Facebook has given users that special entry to gain and peek / look / interact with strangers / friends/ peers and get private access of lives of people across. It gives them a sense of comparison, motivation, ‘who’s doing what / where / when & how’ factor in them. It taps the “curiosity” factor of people about one another.
Today, through SNS power houses like Twitter, one is free to express (Only through 140 characters) what he / she wants to for the world to ‘follow’.
Remember, the actual number of people tweeting across references and links, information is still just a minuscule percentage of users actually browsing / logged in and using the application. But the impact it sends across, the idea it transcends across divisions is amazing.
At the end of it all, SNS helps in breaking the plurality of texts, cultural differences, enabling autonomy of ones skills and blending it with the aesthetic gullibility of a user tweeting or posting from one corner of the world, users from all across discussing something on ones wall seems to touch a million hearts. Because it’s right in front of them and it is happening in real time.
Today, viral and SNS techniques seem to be used in Political campaigns, educational / exam/ study tweets are becoming a craze across institutions, people looking for blood donations to save a life find tweeting a helpful option to reach message across quickly, marketing and PR agencies anyway live by the same tool but with the message that Starbucks has sent across to millions of us, using SNS for market research and surveys, there is no looking back, once the right words are fit in through the right channel at such low costs.
So with friends becoming fans, peers becoming clicks & important news and opinion surveys becoming tweets, get and stay connected.
Have fun.
Happy socializing!

Thanks for a great post and a clear viewpoint on the differences on WHY one uses Twitter vs. Facebook vs. Linked In. I’ve found Twitter to be more of a broadcast center and less about conversation (it’s hard to have a real conversation when pieces get lost in the mix).
Facebook is not only fun, it’s connects you more personally without TMI (too much info – well usually). I’ve gotten to see the human side of people I’ve met or seen online and that makes me more likely to take a second look at their services/offers…Roxanne
Hi Roxanne
Thanks for your comments. Very true, Twitter is for those who are ready to communicate / broadcast just in words with anyone and everyone… and statistically its said women communicate more while men share links and references more which they find it not so convenient offline
