PRESS evolving to ‘Press this’: In India

Press this

Press Evolution:Newspaper

By press in common parlance we usually refer to Printing press, but in journalistic & mass communication terminology, we mean print media such as newspapers, periodicals, magazines, news agencies, press syndicates and any such printed material.

The idea behind forming a press in terms of newspapers and similar related agencies has been to share public information, from the nation or the people themselves and create a powerful vehicle of expressions and information. Today, newspapers have evolved in terms of not only content but also the way it is presented to the mass across countries.

From the time of Maharajas (Kings) and before the period of Christ, we can see wall carvings, signs and stone art symbols across cultures and religions. Kings like Ashoka and Mughal emperors have made powerful use of these media for ages to keep the public informed and educated.

As wall carvings went to the next level of stone and sculptures with writings to newsletters  as manuscripts, the development of the printing press was gradually taking place. Soon enough India found its first official newspaper courtesy of James Augustus Hickey in the form of Bengal Gazette in the year 1780.

The first printing press was established in Mumbai in 1674, second in Madras and third in Calcutta in 1779. Hickey’s Bengal Gazette also known as the Calcutta General Advertiser began on 29th January 1780. It was described beautifully as a ‘weekly political and commercial paper open to all parties but influenced by none’

The first two decades of the 19th century saw rigid control of the Press by Lords Wellesley and Warren Hastings. In-spite of this, slowly the Indian readers were soon enough exposed to a very large number of printing houses in the form of newspapers and newsletters across Mumbai, Calcutta & Madras in the form of Darpan, Dig Darshan, Samachar, Friend of India etc.

During this period came the father of the Press industry revolution who raised the need, awareness and to give what the press very truly deserved, “the freedom of the press”, he was none other than Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

Soon enough there was established the first truly owned Indian newspaper by Gangadhar Bhattacharya which was also called as the Bengal Gazette. Rapid developments across languages soon evolved in the form of print press in Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Gujrati, Tamil, Malayalam, Assamese, Punjabi in the later part of 1850’s. As another decade moved in with the war of independence breaking in, the press became more prominent, more popular and a much needed power tool for information and education for people in general.

When we look into the advantages behind a newspaper and such other print media, even if there is low subscription or reach in terms of actual sale of the IP of newspapers, magazine, newsletters etc. the readership finally goes high. Especially in a country like India where there is still a huge number of people who are not literate, the news spreads in the form of sharing information from person to person. So the power of PRESS is a revolution on it’s own.

Over decades as the most famous and influential newspapers such as Bande Mataram, Kesari, Maratha, Free Press Journal, Madras Standard, Bombay Chronicle etc kept creating waves, so were prominent influencer’s like the great Mahatma Gandhi, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Kasturi Ranga Iyengar etc associations with it.

The support for this medium of education and information became larger than life. Soon enough the influence to influence increased with technology contributing and forming a major role into the digital revolution of information sharing.

Today with millions of users across globally, India ranks high amongst users of internet and stands 2nd across Asia and with more adding up every day.

One of the most popular forms of using press or print information across India today is through blogs and micro blogs. No wonder we find more and more newspapers and magazines going ‘online’ and being a part of the larger revolution of the ‘spot content generation & sharing era’.

Today press has taken a larger role of not only entertaining and educating but also of rapidly evolving with the passage of time. We will soon be seeing a lot more of micro blogging platforms and blogs presenting the power of Press to us.

So till then, press this, share and keep evolving & learning!

Tips to survive the Workplace: The Golden Rule

9 Tips on How to survive the Workplace:

How to survive Workplace

Cubicle

“How to survives” have been part of each one of us at some point or the other in our lives, especially with regards to workplace. Today,  I bring out here certain tips which will help you to be at peace with yourself & others including fellow employees, subordinates and the most important of all – your boss.

The various tips listed below, mirror my attempts at survival at the workplace in the short career that I have had. This in no way can transform into the Bible or a magical potion to attaining nirvana at the workplace.  Kindly note, they are my personal views and as I would like to call them, the – golden rules to survive the workplace.

1. Never Compare: This is especially true when you have joined a new company which is more or less engaged in the same activity or in the same industry as your previous company. Yes, comparisons are bound to arise on the work culture, infrastructure, technology and other issues which one might find different from your earlier employer. However this does not go on to translate into a good company-bad company thing. One has to remember that every organization has its own ways of functioning and this may create limitations in the style of functioning. You will be required to appreciate the presence of certain things. However it is not necessary to get stuck at the things that you don’t like and crib about them especially to senior colleagues or other team members who have been there for a long time. Instead try to devise work around solutions to these things which will enable you to live the same or similar life that you lived in your earlier organization. Besides if everything were to be like your previous organization, Why Change in the first place??? Point to ponder isn’t it.
2. DO NOT enter into Conflict situations: A wise man rightly said – There are two things in life that you cannot wish for – A good wife and a good boss. If you manage to get both, then maybe you are dreaming! However most of the times, from my experiences, there have been differences of opinion between the boss and the subordinate (you). In such times, rather than a heated discussion on the subject, it is always better to put your point of view/justification across and then let the boss decide on the future course of action. This not only enables closure of the topic under discussion but also ensures a better working environment around you. One only needs to have two to three interactions with people to know their body makeup. Also most bosses are known to trust their instinct more than anything else. So rather than arguing on something and wasting precious time and peace of mind accept the verdict and move on. This may sound to be due to a lack of self confidence in your abilities to some readers but personally speaking, this is a much better way of being in a win-win situation.
3.  DO NOT cozy up: We may have seen many of our colleagues in action doing exactly this. These are people who may wish the boss hello in a more than endearing manner, carry their baggage, go to lunch with them, bend over backwards to do things for them, go to lunch with them and nod off their heads to every word  and every decision taken irrespective of the consequences. These are people part of the yes-brigade who may find themselves at cross roads when the boss just dumps them for a better opportunity. Though certain of the activities mentioned may form part of your routine unknowingly, but this kind of attitude brings you into a direct line of conflict with your colleagues and subordinates. This is what we call a “chamcha” in the colloquial language, here in the city of Mumbai, India. Also, if this guarantees promotion (as expected by some) you are better off being in a new organization than imbibing this quality. Always make your work speak for itself.

4. Never draw comparisons with anyone: This is especially true when we try to compare salaries, promotions, work profiles etc. These kind of comparisons will only end up in you being even more disgruntled and dissatisfied and may start affecting your performance. This will also lead to a stressful work life and you will end up a psychological wreck. Every man is there for a reason and you are also doing what you are doing for a reason. Just try to become the best in whatever you do and leave the rest to the others. Always remember we are never short of options. Give it your best shot. If it doesn’t work the first time, put in even more effort and if the outcome is still not up-to what you wanted, you always have the option of moving on. There is no dearth of opportunities in this world. Only require people to look in the right places.
5. Work-Life balance: This is the latest management mantra that’s going around. However rosy it may seem let me assure you, there is no such thing as a work-life balance. Work, these days has become so intense that it has started to seep into our daily lives. Also with the advent of nuclear families, family life has also crept into our line of work. When we crib about us having more work to do, we need to just stop for a moment and think about the last phone call or email we have had from our friends or near and dear ones. And I can safely vouch that there would be no man who has not received a call or an email from family or friends on a single day of his working life. I also do personally feel that we are always better off not scheduling any personal engagements on a working day even if it is after office hours. So stop cribbing and start working.
6. Stop looking at the watch: This is especially for those of us who are of the belief that office timings should be as defined in the company rule book. Had that been the case, India would not have been the outsourcing super power that it is today. Also, a work day should be defined by the activities at hand and ensuring completion of these tasks. In such circumstances, one needs to just stop and think of what would happen to the work left unattended at our table in case we are unable to resume the next day due to various strikes or disease or a family urgency and the additional burden it would create on our own colleagues and put ourselves in their shoes. I am always reminded of the opening scene in the movie Hollowman wherein Kevin Bacon ( the actor playing Hollowman) takes a break from his work and looks up and the sign pasted there says

“You should be working”

7. Resolve issues: Always try and resolve issues at your table itself. If it seems that an issue may go out of hand, consult your immediate reporting authority. Rather than letting an issue take its own time and getting escalated to various higher-ups and turning into a nasty situation, take control of the situation. It has often been seen that people take great pleasure in sending emails after emails on the same subject making it a pain in the eyes of the other people marked in the mails, without taking any action. This only complicates matters further and leads to frustration at the work place.
8. Enquire: At the cost of being branded an obtrusive colleague, enquire about what your fellow colleague is doing and what you can do to reduce his load. This is especially helpful in times when within the same team one of the guys is engaged in a demanding project and the other is having a relatively easy day. The very act of asking in itself helps soother the other colleagues nerves and help him in completing his work in a more efficient manner. Also, never be shy of helping out your co-colleague  in completing his work even at the cost of being late than usual in getting home. Remember this may happen to you too.

9. Remember: Finally remember the following two golden rules.

Rule 1: THE BOSS IS ALWAYS RIGHT

Rule 2: IF THE BOSS IS WRONG, APPLY RULE 1

So go ahead, work your worries away. Have a great day ahead!

Regards

Mani.S. (A.k.a Ananth.S.)

Social CRM

Social Media Marketing has spread across the globe today. Why will it not?

Social networking sites like Facebook are becoming a massively populated, loved & sought after nation for both, users and marketers today.

With the addition of new technology tools getting added to the vast section of the majorly expanding marketing arena, the need to connect in-depth with the customer today, has only increased.

The core here is, where does the role of the much needed Customer relationship manager (CRM) come in.

Or is it not needed anymore?

The answer is a very simple, yes, it is needed & more than before.

Now that the conversations are being handled online across  clients:Following points are very much essential:

  • A CRM who can make sure that the applied technological marketing tool impact is utilized or not is very much essential today.
  • Adding up a social connect site for your client is not the solution. Tracking it, receiving feedback, improvising it regularly with response, feedback from clients based on their needed goals etc is what will make the social media campaign a successful one finally.
  • If your role is limited to just creating the social connect pages as a social media specialist, make sure you either do not go ahead with the campaign or inform the client of the much needed mutual response from their end for this magical miracle of a power tool to make the much desired impact. Trust has to be mutual, both for the tools and the clients to make this work.

So the question is, how does a CRM fit in between all of this today? How and how much does he impact the Social Media Quotient of your business?

Every business today seems to adapt, implement technology for every single purpose.

Here is where the challenge & skill of a CRM to take your organization and your esteemed clients to the summit of their goals comes into the whole picture. The idea is to blend technology, tie it up a notch with the human skills of personal touch, add that and integrate the same face of your CRM to your online profiles while connecting with your clients and make sure he or she is as technically and market wise sound as your IT and Marketing team is skilled with their respective skill sets.

The power of the tools of social media are unbelievably massive and thus the head that yields the timely yet spontaneous decisions and understands the customers changing needs today, needs to be a combination of your good old CRM with latest technology market research tools and be industry alert. Knowledge of the varied tools like twitter, hootsuite, foursquare, linkedin etc and knowing what they can do for your client is what would make the whole campaign work for real

With this, the role and career of your CRM has not only doubled but become a lot more accountable and responsible than before.

There is so much more a CRM needs to do today? Give us your views on the same…. We would love to hear from you.

Advertising

Favourite Ads

Dear friends,

This blog post is long overdue from my end. Finally after a quality survey in the last 2 weeks, I am writing this post on ADVERTISING as requested by many of our readers from India.

Its been just over 7 years and across 18 Brands that I have divided my time between both the worlds of advertising and marketing. But luckily the new age techniques got added and with that I always realized that in today’s scenario, what is needed is a combination of a real time connect with the audience.  Only then will we  be able to touch base at varied levels with the today’s consumer. There is a long journey ahead and as I finally pooled in the survey results yesterday conducted with scores of members of TECHDIVINE Creative Services, the results were simply splendid.

A brief Introduction of this post:

Advertising, what it meant before: ‘A form of communication with an intention to persuade the viewer to buy or consume a particular brand or product’

Today: Advertising is “Information with quality entertainment to build a strong appeal and generate immediate response”

There are too many types of advertising methods & techniques that have been developed over centuries.

Right from the time when kings and queens ruled, walls and rocks were inscribed, painted propagating the merits of the rulers.  Soon, people themselves started delivering messages and advertising the rulers by saying out aloud the success of the rulers to its masses.  Then came the time when boards and people holding boards with messages were popular.

But the whole scenario changed with the introduction of print media entering the scene. Soon there were printed advertisements and flyer’s all around.

Advertising was evolving quickly. Radio, broadcast, Product advertising using guerrilla advertising techniques, infomercials, online advertising, mobile advertising, social media marketing and so on.

The highest recorded spot individual advertising spent was in the year 2009 wherein during the super bowl football game, an average single 30 second TV ad during the event cost around $ 3 million. Whoa!

What has changed the scenario so much?

As we looked into many different aspects of it, lot of our members gave their views of their favourite ads seen in the last 1 year  (India).

The message was clear. The viewer today needs more than just flashy content.

The audience today needs:

  • A clear message
  • Brand appeal touching base with the product characteristic
  • Strong relevance and message to product association
  • Strong concept
  • Easy Brand recall
  • A possible legendary icon if it could create  that the viewers can relate to
  • Lots of quality entertainment

Few of the favourite ads (All medium – Print / Video / Online….) as chosen by our members & our views on the same too:

Closeup Revolving door:

Our Views: Superb ad. Nice blend of the right tone and style of message across. Fresh and it works!

Airtel Ad:SRK

Our Views: Superb Ad. They could not have chosen a better man to endorse the same. SRK, the King himself connecting with a humble message “Akele hum kuch bhi nahi…”

Incredible India:

Our Views: Probably the best from the lot. Personally, our First Favourite. All stars!

Vodafone Zozoo ad: International Roaming:

Our Views: ICONIC. Superb ad(s). All the ads are simple, humorous & have a clear Message. The character is LEGENDARY! Connects with audience of all ages.

Center Shock ad:

Our Views: Good Ad. Appeals to the product’s target audience.

“Old Ad”: But still listed as favourite: Fevicol:

Our Views: Superb Ad. Personally, our second favourite.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk:

Our Views: Superb Ad. Clear, precise and connects. As most of the Cadbury ads.

Bajaj Pulsar Ad:

Our Views: Good Ad. Flashy but a little overdone.I guess they are right, definitely a  male!

Tata Docomo: Ganesha

Our Views: Superb Ad

DLF IPL 2010:

Our Views: Superb Ad. Jut as the brand, a powerful appeal and an amazing visual connect. Just like the game, larger than life.

Coca Cola Ad1:The Library

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKV0kR6Ih0s

Our Views: Superb Ad. Visually and in terms of the message. A perfect combination of Brand and appeal.

Coca Cola Ad2:

Our Views: Good Ad. Nice connect.

Max NewYork: Cricket

Our Views: Good ad.

Pepsi:

Our Views: Ok Ad. Ranbir at his best so far. But the appeal could have been a much hard hitting message than what is. The connect somewhat seems to be missing here for a beverage drink especially for the ‘YOUNGISTAN’.

Union Bank of India promoted the running of joint bank accounts with a print advertising campaign featuring one of India’s most well known couple: Mohandas Karamchand (Mahatma) Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi on India’s 100 Rupee note: M K Gandhi Ad campaign

UBI: M K Gandhi Ad: Joint Account

Our Views: Superb Ad.

Aseema Childrens Trust:

Aseema Ad

Our Views: Superb Ad. Powerful and gets the message across clearly.

That wraps it up for this post……….

Do give me your views and comments on the same.

Would love to hear from you.

Dear Friends,

This month marks our 3rd Anniversary of the Creative Writers blog.

Creative Writers Blog

Creative Writing

The journey began with the first publication and the Times of India interview and coverage of the coffee table poetry bookExpressions“, but it was only by end 2008 that we got an idea to get other writers too to add their ideas, experiences and stories and share them in such a large platform.

As the readers and comments kept increasing, with more inputs, critique, suggestions from all of you, we added interactivity, free registrations for comments, Premium memberships and so on to the creative writer blog.

Today, we proudly stand at 183 –Posts, 973 Comments with 11 Authors and scores of Categories under varied subjects of “Technology, Career, Education, Gadgets, Life, Passion, People, Marketing, Online Media, Art, Legends, Freebies, Social Media Marketing……..

We sincerely THANK all our dear readers and of course our wonderful authors who have contributed their time and skills to us and have been a part of the Creative Writing family.

Hope you have enjoyed a good read. It will only get better!

Feel free to write to us with any suggestions, comments or your views on the same.
