PRESS evolving to ‘Press this’: In India

Press this

Press Evolution:Newspaper

By press in common parlance we usually refer to Printing press, but in journalistic & mass communication terminology, we mean print media such as newspapers, periodicals, magazines, news agencies, press syndicates and any such printed material.

The idea behind forming a press in terms of newspapers and similar related agencies has been to share public information, from the nation or the people themselves and create a powerful vehicle of expressions and information. Today, newspapers have evolved in terms of not only content but also the way it is presented to the mass across countries.

From the time of Maharajas (Kings) and before the period of Christ, we can see wall carvings, signs and stone art symbols across cultures and religions. Kings like Ashoka and Mughal emperors have made powerful use of these media for ages to keep the public informed and educated.

As wall carvings went to the next level of stone and sculptures with writings to newsletters  as manuscripts, the development of the printing press was gradually taking place. Soon enough India found its first official newspaper courtesy of James Augustus Hickey in the form of Bengal Gazette in the year 1780.

The first printing press was established in Mumbai in 1674, second in Madras and third in Calcutta in 1779. Hickey’s Bengal Gazette also known as the Calcutta General Advertiser began on 29th January 1780. It was described beautifully as a ‘weekly political and commercial paper open to all parties but influenced by none’

The first two decades of the 19th century saw rigid control of the Press by Lords Wellesley and Warren Hastings. In-spite of this, slowly the Indian readers were soon enough exposed to a very large number of printing houses in the form of newspapers and newsletters across Mumbai, Calcutta & Madras in the form of Darpan, Dig Darshan, Samachar, Friend of India etc.

During this period came the father of the Press industry revolution who raised the need, awareness and to give what the press very truly deserved, “the freedom of the press”, he was none other than Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

Soon enough there was established the first truly owned Indian newspaper by Gangadhar Bhattacharya which was also called as the Bengal Gazette. Rapid developments across languages soon evolved in the form of print press in Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Gujrati, Tamil, Malayalam, Assamese, Punjabi in the later part of 1850’s. As another decade moved in with the war of independence breaking in, the press became more prominent, more popular and a much needed power tool for information and education for people in general.

When we look into the advantages behind a newspaper and such other print media, even if there is low subscription or reach in terms of actual sale of the IP of newspapers, magazine, newsletters etc. the readership finally goes high. Especially in a country like India where there is still a huge number of people who are not literate, the news spreads in the form of sharing information from person to person. So the power of PRESS is a revolution on it’s own.

Over decades as the most famous and influential newspapers such as Bande Mataram, Kesari, Maratha, Free Press Journal, Madras Standard, Bombay Chronicle etc kept creating waves, so were prominent influencer’s like the great Mahatma Gandhi, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Kasturi Ranga Iyengar etc associations with it.

The support for this medium of education and information became larger than life. Soon enough the influence to influence increased with technology contributing and forming a major role into the digital revolution of information sharing.

Today with millions of users across globally, India ranks high amongst users of internet and stands 2nd across Asia and with more adding up every day.

One of the most popular forms of using press or print information across India today is through blogs and micro blogs. No wonder we find more and more newspapers and magazines going ‘online’ and being a part of the larger revolution of the ‘spot content generation & sharing era’.

Today press has taken a larger role of not only entertaining and educating but also of rapidly evolving with the passage of time. We will soon be seeing a lot more of micro blogging platforms and blogs presenting the power of Press to us.

So till then, press this, share and keep evolving & learning!

Tips to survive the Workplace: The Golden Rule

9 Tips on How to survive the Workplace:

How to survive Workplace

Cubicle

“How to survives” have been part of each one of us at some point or the other in our lives, especially with regards to workplace. Today,  I bring out here certain tips which will help you to be at peace with yourself & others including fellow employees, subordinates and the most important of all – your boss.

The various tips listed below, mirror my attempts at survival at the workplace in the short career that I have had. This in no way can transform into the Bible or a magical potion to attaining nirvana at the workplace.  Kindly note, they are my personal views and as I would like to call them, the – golden rules to survive the workplace.

1. Never Compare: This is especially true when you have joined a new company which is more or less engaged in the same activity or in the same industry as your previous company. Yes, comparisons are bound to arise on the work culture, infrastructure, technology and other issues which one might find different from your earlier employer. However this does not go on to translate into a good company-bad company thing. One has to remember that every organization has its own ways of functioning and this may create limitations in the style of functioning. You will be required to appreciate the presence of certain things. However it is not necessary to get stuck at the things that you don’t like and crib about them especially to senior colleagues or other team members who have been there for a long time. Instead try to devise work around solutions to these things which will enable you to live the same or similar life that you lived in your earlier organization. Besides if everything were to be like your previous organization, Why Change in the first place??? Point to ponder isn’t it.
2. DO NOT enter into Conflict situations: A wise man rightly said – There are two things in life that you cannot wish for – A good wife and a good boss. If you manage to get both, then maybe you are dreaming! However most of the times, from my experiences, there have been differences of opinion between the boss and the subordinate (you). In such times, rather than a heated discussion on the subject, it is always better to put your point of view/justification across and then let the boss decide on the future course of action. This not only enables closure of the topic under discussion but also ensures a better working environment around you. One only needs to have two to three interactions with people to know their body makeup. Also most bosses are known to trust their instinct more than anything else. So rather than arguing on something and wasting precious time and peace of mind accept the verdict and move on. This may sound to be due to a lack of self confidence in your abilities to some readers but personally speaking, this is a much better way of being in a win-win situation.
3.  DO NOT cozy up: We may have seen many of our colleagues in action doing exactly this. These are people who may wish the boss hello in a more than endearing manner, carry their baggage, go to lunch with them, bend over backwards to do things for them, go to lunch with them and nod off their heads to every word  and every decision taken irrespective of the consequences. These are people part of the yes-brigade who may find themselves at cross roads when the boss just dumps them for a better opportunity. Though certain of the activities mentioned may form part of your routine unknowingly, but this kind of attitude brings you into a direct line of conflict with your colleagues and subordinates. This is what we call a “chamcha” in the colloquial language, here in the city of Mumbai, India. Also, if this guarantees promotion (as expected by some) you are better off being in a new organization than imbibing this quality. Always make your work speak for itself.

4. Never draw comparisons with anyone: This is especially true when we try to compare salaries, promotions, work profiles etc. These kind of comparisons will only end up in you being even more disgruntled and dissatisfied and may start affecting your performance. This will also lead to a stressful work life and you will end up a psychological wreck. Every man is there for a reason and you are also doing what you are doing for a reason. Just try to become the best in whatever you do and leave the rest to the others. Always remember we are never short of options. Give it your best shot. If it doesn’t work the first time, put in even more effort and if the outcome is still not up-to what you wanted, you always have the option of moving on. There is no dearth of opportunities in this world. Only require people to look in the right places.
5. Work-Life balance: This is the latest management mantra that’s going around. However rosy it may seem let me assure you, there is no such thing as a work-life balance. Work, these days has become so intense that it has started to seep into our daily lives. Also with the advent of nuclear families, family life has also crept into our line of work. When we crib about us having more work to do, we need to just stop for a moment and think about the last phone call or email we have had from our friends or near and dear ones. And I can safely vouch that there would be no man who has not received a call or an email from family or friends on a single day of his working life. I also do personally feel that we are always better off not scheduling any personal engagements on a working day even if it is after office hours. So stop cribbing and start working.
6. Stop looking at the watch: This is especially for those of us who are of the belief that office timings should be as defined in the company rule book. Had that been the case, India would not have been the outsourcing super power that it is today. Also, a work day should be defined by the activities at hand and ensuring completion of these tasks. In such circumstances, one needs to just stop and think of what would happen to the work left unattended at our table in case we are unable to resume the next day due to various strikes or disease or a family urgency and the additional burden it would create on our own colleagues and put ourselves in their shoes. I am always reminded of the opening scene in the movie Hollowman wherein Kevin Bacon ( the actor playing Hollowman) takes a break from his work and looks up and the sign pasted there says

“You should be working”

7. Resolve issues: Always try and resolve issues at your table itself. If it seems that an issue may go out of hand, consult your immediate reporting authority. Rather than letting an issue take its own time and getting escalated to various higher-ups and turning into a nasty situation, take control of the situation. It has often been seen that people take great pleasure in sending emails after emails on the same subject making it a pain in the eyes of the other people marked in the mails, without taking any action. This only complicates matters further and leads to frustration at the work place.
8. Enquire: At the cost of being branded an obtrusive colleague, enquire about what your fellow colleague is doing and what you can do to reduce his load. This is especially helpful in times when within the same team one of the guys is engaged in a demanding project and the other is having a relatively easy day. The very act of asking in itself helps soother the other colleagues nerves and help him in completing his work in a more efficient manner. Also, never be shy of helping out your co-colleague  in completing his work even at the cost of being late than usual in getting home. Remember this may happen to you too.

9. Remember: Finally remember the following two golden rules.

Rule 1: THE BOSS IS ALWAYS RIGHT

Rule 2: IF THE BOSS IS WRONG, APPLY RULE 1

So go ahead, work your worries away. Have a great day ahead!

Regards

Mani.S. (A.k.a Ananth.S.)

The News behind a newsppaer:

All the students of grades 7, 8 and 9 marched over to the buses parked in a grid pattern like the houses of the Indus Valley Civilization. We were all geared up and ready to drive down to the DNA (Daily News and Analysis) printing press in Vashi to learn the entire story of the newspaper that reaches our doorsteps at 7 in the morning, right from setting what percentage of coloured ink the logo on the front page needs to the proofing of the paper to insure that there are no smudges.

DNA News

DNA News

The long drive from the school in Juhu down to the printing press in Navi Mumbai was predicted to take up to two hours, but time flew by- for most of us- as we chatted along with our friends, seeming to find more topics outside of the window. After asking “Are we there yet?” uncountable times, we final got there.
The printing press seemed quite a serene and quiet place from the outside, but that opinion was shattered when we heard it after we got off the bus. The transition from the somewhat cool bus to the scorching heat of the factory compelled our sweat glands to force the sweat out. There was a faint synthetic ink smell lingering in the air, wafting around the huge rolled bales of fresh recycled paper.
As we made our way through huge machines humming, we caught sight of paper being unravelled and printed on at a tremendously rapid pace. In fact, the press could produce 4500 newspapers in just an hour!  Talk about rapid news!
The people at the DNA press were simply fantastic and very helpful. They kindly explained various segments of the press in detail, answering all questions and clearing all our doubts. They diluted their talk by showing us the machines as well so we could comprehend the information visually.
After we were shown how they printed paper, the buckets of ink, how they dried it, how they printed plates, the coloured ink percentages and how they preserved the ink, we were taken into a large conference room to give us an introduction on DNA’s history as well as ‘YA!’, which is a newspaper just for kids, of which we each given a copy of.
I learnt a couple of great things there, such as the fact that they added a chemical to the ink so that it didn’t smudge. I also learnt how the newspaper was assembled and put into boxes to be carted off. I never knew that so many processes have to be followed in order to make a newspaper- right from a newspaper reporter writing an article to advertisement spaces being sold to printing it.

This experience has increased my knowledge by miles- around as many miles as there are letters in a newspaper.

Thank you DNA and their entire team for such a wonderful experience and Thank you EcoleMondiale for this amazing opportunity.

Social & Corporate Responsibility: Stay Connected

With so much of social media marketing, brand analysis, consumer needs statistics, product insight interactions etc the power of media & the number game online, it becomes a great everyday learning school and a wonderful experience. It adds so much of learning on the real meaning of the term BRAND with respect to different products and industries & what they mean to each of them.

The work is great and there is so much of research and new tools understanding happening here on a daily basis. We just finished 3 big marketing campaigns each for two of our corporate clients into the trading & retail industry last week. It will be going live the coming week from their end.

The first thing that we did after the campaigns is ask ourselves, “Isn’t the rent due to the “society” for some time now?”

That’s right, corporate social responsibility is a key factor for every team member associated with Techdivine Creative Services.

It’s been over 5 years since my association with varied NGO’s across cities in India. I am still deeply honored for being considered for the Rashtriya Gaurav Award for the varied contributions to different NGO’s. I remember my different experiences across well known NGO’s and I actually realized that not everyone associated with an NGO need to be understanding the cause fully or even caring about the same to the core. That brought me close to also understanding the fact that writing a cheque of X amount to an NGO does not fulfill your duty towards the family surrounding you and your loved ones, which is the society in general.

The works that I have associated myself with in the last 5 years have been from taking and educating the less privileged on different aspects and subjects to doing volunteering works during calamities to arranging IT literacy sessions for groups that would love to learn and grow with IT, but cannot reach the right source or afford the same, to just being there for those who need anyone just to be around them for some time. It’s only during these associations and interactions with scores across the cities of India, that I ran into massively big & well known names in our nation who have been doing this and lot more for decades. Their experiences have deeply humbled me over the years. I used to feel proud of myself when I began contributing my time or skill for those less fortunate, but when I realized the amount of efforts that I could have actually put into it over a period of time, I felt more humbled. It’s very true to say that, no amount of profits in life or number cracking achievements can give you a real peaceful sleep than knowing that you made a positive impact on someone who really needed it in their life that day and whom we have never known before.

Mother Teresa has been an unbelievable influence on my life and when I see the smile on the sweet mother’s face when she is with her children in her videos and across platforms, the aura of positive energy that already seems to surround her only gets bigger. I can never become or even fathom to do what she has done for billions across the globe, as I am like a candle in front of the sun when I look at her, but if I could while making the rightful contribution towards my family also always make that positive impact to those who are part of the society but not related directly to our lives, the feeling is amazing. At the end of the day, it is to make ourselves feel better that we do something for someone, well, for most of us. There are those around us too, who do it because it is their greatness to contribute without expecting pride feeling in return. They are truly the ones that are keeping the world in one single safe and sane place. Societal contributors and influencers like Mother Teresa, now being the mother that she was, is not a task that is easy or humanly possible to follow.  Even during our recent visit to one of their abodes, the air and the aura surrounding us were amazingly positive. Attached is a pic taken from their facility.

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa

As more of these discussions and thoughts flowed across with our team at Techdivine creative services yesterday, (this happened after the team presented the marketing reports for the week, by the way, expecting  a pep-talk probably from my end on how to analyze and perform better, instead, this is what they got to hear). But they did not complain. Every member of the team here knows the importance that we associate to Social responsibility on a regular basis.

We are hoping to one day soon plan out a forum wherein we can coordinate, plan, invite and conduct lot of social initiatives on education, social abuse help groups & motivation events with the support of the entire team and good wishes from our members across countries.

No wonder that Corporate like TATA or Infosys today commands so much of respect across the globe today, with so much of social help that they have attached themselves in sincerely carrying out as part of their routine. They are great motivations and inspirations to any corporate today.

As the weekend draws to a close, I guess it is time for a real time social connect anyway.

Stay focused, stay connected & stay really social!

God Bless,

Ananth V.

Advertising

Favourite Ads

Dear friends,

This blog post is long overdue from my end. Finally after a quality survey in the last 2 weeks, I am writing this post on ADVERTISING as requested by many of our readers from India.

Its been just over 7 years and across 18 Brands that I have divided my time between both the worlds of advertising and marketing. But luckily the new age techniques got added and with that I always realized that in today’s scenario, what is needed is a combination of a real time connect with the audience.  Only then will we  be able to touch base at varied levels with the today’s consumer. There is a long journey ahead and as I finally pooled in the survey results yesterday conducted with scores of members of TECHDIVINE Creative Services, the results were simply splendid.

A brief Introduction of this post:

Advertising, what it meant before: ‘A form of communication with an intention to persuade the viewer to buy or consume a particular brand or product’

Today: Advertising is “Information with quality entertainment to build a strong appeal and generate immediate response”

There are too many types of advertising methods & techniques that have been developed over centuries.

Right from the time when kings and queens ruled, walls and rocks were inscribed, painted propagating the merits of the rulers.  Soon, people themselves started delivering messages and advertising the rulers by saying out aloud the success of the rulers to its masses.  Then came the time when boards and people holding boards with messages were popular.

But the whole scenario changed with the introduction of print media entering the scene. Soon there were printed advertisements and flyer’s all around.

Advertising was evolving quickly. Radio, broadcast, Product advertising using guerrilla advertising techniques, infomercials, online advertising, mobile advertising, social media marketing and so on.

The highest recorded spot individual advertising spent was in the year 2009 wherein during the super bowl football game, an average single 30 second TV ad during the event cost around $ 3 million. Whoa!

What has changed the scenario so much?

As we looked into many different aspects of it, lot of our members gave their views of their favourite ads seen in the last 1 year  (India).

The message was clear. The viewer today needs more than just flashy content.

The audience today needs:

  • A clear message
  • Brand appeal touching base with the product characteristic
  • Strong relevance and message to product association
  • Strong concept
  • Easy Brand recall
  • A possible legendary icon if it could create  that the viewers can relate to
  • Lots of quality entertainment

Few of the favourite ads (All medium – Print / Video / Online….) as chosen by our members & our views on the same too:

Closeup Revolving door:

Our Views: Superb ad. Nice blend of the right tone and style of message across. Fresh and it works!

Airtel Ad:SRK

Our Views: Superb Ad. They could not have chosen a better man to endorse the same. SRK, the King himself connecting with a humble message “Akele hum kuch bhi nahi…”

Bajaj Pulsar Ad:

Our Views: Good Ad. Flashy but a little overdone.I guess they are right, definitely a  male!

Tata Docomo: Ganesha

Our Views: Superb Ad

DLF IPL 2010:

Our Views: Superb Ad. Jut as the brand, a powerful appeal and an amazing visual connect. Just like the game, larger than life.

Coca Cola Ad1:The Library

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKV0kR6Ih0s

Our Views: Superb Ad. Visually and in terms of the message. A perfect combination of Brand and appeal.

Coca Cola Ad2:

Our Views: Good Ad. Nice connect.

Max NewYork: Cricket

Our Views: Good ad.

Pepsi:

Our Views: Ok Ad. Ranbir at his best so far. But the appeal could have been a much hard hitting message than what is. The connect somewhat seems to be missing here for a beverage drink especially for the ‘YOUNGISTAN’.

Union Bank of India promoted the running of joint bank accounts with a print advertising campaign featuring one of India’s most well known couple: Mohandas Karamchand (Mahatma) Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi on India’s 100 Rupee note: M K Gandhi Ad campaign

UBI: M K Gandhi Ad: Joint Account

Our Views: Superb Ad.

Aseema Childrens Trust:

Aseema Ad

Our Views: Superb Ad. Powerful and gets the message across clearly.

That wraps it up for this post……….

Do give me your views and comments on the same.

Would love to hear from you.

Quote for the Week on “Inspiration”

INSPIRE

INSPIRE

Life doesn’t cheer the weak the timid or those content with their fifteen minutes of fame.
It applauds the dreamers, the adventurers and those who swore to rise above horizons.

For only those bold enough to chase dreams are the ones who finally catch them.
It doesn’t matter who you are today, what or who you were and what you will be.

All that matters is the legacy you finally leave behind.

Did you become all that you are capable of becoming?
Did you give more than you could take?
Did you achieve your dreams, while all around you thought you were chasing illusions?

Think, plan, implement and contribute – GROW more than just ‘numbers’

Have a great weekend!

Hi friends,

I am back again with yet another post.

Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) – 2010 – MY DREAM RUN!!!!

The Start, the dream run and the finish:

I thought that a mere reply or comment to Techdivine’s SCMM article may not encapsulate the myriad range of feelings that one encountered during the Marathon.

I Would like to thank TECHDIVINE Creative Services for updating through tweets too the status of the marathon.

The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has been around for 7 years now and I have had the good luck of running the marathon 6 times leaving aside the first time. However this year was a watershed year for me personally speaking. I have had 2 Dream-runs, 3 Half-Marathons & this year I ran the FULL MARATHON!

Let me trace the steps that led to this marathon for me.

Somewhere in the beginning of August, one of my friends’ mailed me about registrations for the marathon being open.

Lazy as I am, I logged onto the SCMM site a week after the communiqué. I was surprised to find that the registrations for the half-marathon were closed. Hence I registered for the next best option – the 42 Km Full Marathon. This was done keeping in mind the fact that the runners for the 21 Kms & 42 Kms begin their respective races from the same starting point. Hence I always had it at the back of mind that I will start off as a full marathon runner and end up running the 21 Km Half-marathon along with my friends.

Come Saturday 16 Jan 2010, my friend and me, went to collect the Bibs and Goodie bags. At the WTC Expo, realization dawned on me that the starting points for both the Half-marathon and Full marathons were different. While the Full Marathon commenced from CST, the Half marathon started from Bandra.

I saw this as a great opportunity coming my way. Never had I attempted anything of such a kind. As for practice for these races, the only practice that I ever did was on Race day!!!.

So, come race day & I was pretty much eager to go the full distance. (Kindly note, this is not advised at all)

I have always been either a quick runner or a brisk walker. Not the average jogger kind of guy who would easily go on jogging till the end of the race. Normally, I carry a small travel bag with all sundries in it and deposit it at the baggage counter. However, today, I had made up my mind that, if it seemed tough, I may return from the very place where I gave up. Hence I carried only my backpack which had a change of shirt and a few energy packs of electrals (FDC Ltd).

On Race day, I reached the venue 15 minutes before time. The race started sharp at the anointed time of 6:45 AM and there were a million feet pounding the asphalt. Here I was, surrounded by a sea of people many of who were playing the follow the leader game & went where the person ahead of him was going. I tried to keep up pace but after 10 minutes, I started my walk.

Every time I felt some amount of energy in my body, I would run. Then once I was exhausted, I continued walking. I had one simple plan and a few smaller ones that helped me on my way. From my past experience, I knew that an hour of walking will enable me to complete a minimum of 7 Kms. This translated into 6 hours for 42 Kms. So rather than counting the Kms left, I counted the hours.

Smaller numbers meant the brain was always in agreement.

Then another trick was when a marker came along, indicating the number of kms completed, I told myself that 21 Kms still remained.

Irrespective of whether the marker showed 5 Kms or 10 Kms or 15 or 25, I tricked my mind into believing that there were only 20 Kms left to travel and since I had done the 21 Km half-marathon before, the brain sheepishly nodded in agreement.

By the time, I was convinced that I would be able to complete the marathon came the stunning and mighty Bandra Worli Sea Link.

For someone who has never seen it previously, this was a God sent opportunity. However little did I know that this was also one of the worst stretches that the Marathon had to offer. With the clock reading 10:30, I set foot onto the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL).

The sun was at the horizon and every thought of a cool breeze subsided. This coincided with the fact that the water stations that we runners took for granted at every 100 mts, were nowhere in sight. All runners were left to fend for themselves for the entire stretch of 6 Kms on the sea link. So much that all of us were quite thankful when we stepped off the BWSL.

By this time, I had only around 8-9 kms left to complete my first full marathon. As if on cue, my leg started sending signals to the brain that it had had enough and that it may stop walking any minute. There were some indications of this happening earlier too before I set foot on the sea link resulting in a small icepack session at the medical stall put up for this purpose. By the time, I reached within a striking distance of 7 Kms, my legs literally gave way. My toes were starting to turn inwards, my calf starting to bend backwards and my thighs unable to sustain any more body weight. I limped my way actually dragging both legs upto the finish line and heaved a great sigh of relief to have completed the Marathon and still in one piece.

However I would like to thank all those who made this possible. My friends who supported me throughout the race. Then there were parents with their kids lining the streets encouraging us participants to go on. There were kids handing out Parle-G and Marie biscuits, some enterprising ones even handing out soft drinks to the thirsty. There were little slum kids who were thrilled at the number of people who were running and gave us hi-fives. It was a pleasure to see those lit up faces. To see the people who came out onto the streets on a Sunday morning for no reason of their own but just to watch all of us participate and to egg us on in our initiative.

I would like to also make a special mention of the seniors who were running this marathon just like any other youngster and yes there have been many who in their 60s have gone past me while jogging along as against my trundling.

It is really a big appreciative effort on part of the populace to turn up to attend events like this and make their august presence felt and make Mumbai known for what is famous the world over. – For its welcoming hands and open heart.

This was my Marathon and I lived every kilometer of it. Would participate the next year too!!!

Thanks
