Save Indian HOCKEY!!!!!

Victorious Indian Hockey teamDISAPPOINTED!!! This would have been the word on every avid cricket fan’s lips post India’s defeat in the Twenty 20 match played against Sri Lanka at home. Especially with the defeat coming at the end of a successful Test series which saw India crowned as Kings of Test cricket and in a week which saw Pakistan defeat New Zealand in their own den and the meek West Indies holding Australia to a draw in the second test.

However this article, if anybody thought was going to be one of the countless ones dished out on cricket day in and day out and running into pages, then they are in for a surprise. This column is not going to be about cricket at all. It is going to be about its poor cousins who are getting poorer by the day while cricket gets richer by the minute. IF at all any mention of cricket is made, that will only be in the form of a comparison.

What is the national game of India?
If this question were to be asked in schools around the country, chances are that 50% of the students will reply “Cricket” in an enthusiastic, all knowing manner. Such has been the stronghold of cricket on this country that we have forgotten that we have a national game which goes by the name of Hockey. This game is played by 11 players who run after a ball with stick in hand for 70 minutes. Their only aim is to outscore each other by pushing the ball into the opponent’s goal. The team with most goals at the end of the game wins. This in short explains hockey to a layman.

What is the common thread that binds Dhyanchand, Dhanraj Pillay and Pargat Singh?
The answer to this question maybe – “All are Indian names” and I for one will not be surprised to hear this since there doesn’t seem to be any other connection that links these three men to the Gen X of India. However fact remains that these are three men who captained the Indian Hockey team at various stages. Dhyanchand captained the Indian Hockey team when it was at the peak in the 1930s very similar to the heady times we are having in Indian cricket. Pargat Singh captained an Indian side which kept the momentum going in the early 90s and Dhanraj took over the reins in the mid 90s when chaos was the order of the day.

Most people will remember the painful sight of Kapil Dev crying over the alleged match fixing allegations levied by his team mate Manoj Prabhakar. But very few will remember Dhanraj Pillay crying on the same TV channels lamenting about the dying nature of his sport. “I should have played cricket and not hockey” – These were the very words coming from a veteran of 15 years.

However the sport has itself to blame for the mess it finds in. The so called administrators of the sport Indian Hockey Federation never thought of giving the sport a direction or trying to get it into good shape. The players were treated like low class government employees and on tours used to share beds and put up in cheap hotels. So much for playing a professional sport!!!!. Also the facilities and infrastructure required by the players is more often than not unavailable. Due to this many of the players have quit the sport in search of greener pastures. The Indian Hockey Federation itself is embedded in a few controversies of its own and the players and administrators do not see eye to eye. Coaches are appointed and leave midway through their stint due to the overall lackadaisical attitude and non-payments. Even the Sports Ministry does not deem it fit to intervene and change the manner in which the game is run. In short no one seems to be really concerned about what we call the national game of India.

Everyone thought that the movie Chak De India would improve the lives of hockey players and maybe help Indian hockey turn over a new leaf. However the public has a memory that is shortlived and Shahrukh Khan walked away with all the accolades along with the producers who got their money’s worth. ESPN Star came out with a Hockey Premier League which also got fizzled out after a couple of seasons, having lost popularity with Indian audiences which prompted Dhanraj to say “SRK ne movie hockey pe banayee aur paise cricket pe lagaye”.

It will require a Herculean effort on the part of the Sports Ministry and the hockey players to get Indian Hockey back on the winning track. It will also require some support in the form of financial muscle from the cash rich BCCI. We also as Indians should help in drumming up support for the national game in every possible way. It is upto the die-hard fans of the sport to cultivate interest in the sport helping it to grow further. There will be no player in the world who does not like to hear the roar of the crowds which will help him perform better than his opponents. Else I can soon hear the death knell for Indian hockey and the fat lady singing her last tune.

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth ’’ – MUHAMMAD ALI.

alihu

So much has been written, read and said about the most hypnotic legend of all times….. THE ONE THE ONLY – MUHAMMAD ALI, born January 17, 1942.

I have been just one among the billions of admirers of this GREATEST ICON for as long as I can remember.

Yes, I have his books, his Documented videos & it makes me keep wanting to just catch a glimpse of the LEGEND up close & personal one day, just once in my lifetime

Muhammad Ali, what makes him so special- – -

  • Is it the fact that he always did what he said he would.
  • Is it the fact that he called the rounds, his way.
  • Is it because he truly was the BEST
  • or was it because he is forever the PEOPLE’s CHAMP.

He is all that and more. He kept saying,  “I am the Greatest’’ and his very famous words “its not bragging , if you can back it up’’ always keep coming back when you hear any of his critic’s words…..

He was a man who dreamed, who predicted and accomplished every time he set his focus into. He is a man who is all about pure passion.

His impeccable skill, his heart of gold, a man, a legend and the one who made an impact which has been truly larger than life holds all our hearts together.

In Louisville, on October 29, 1960, ALI won his first professional fight he was then in his greater bouts duly crowned the heavyweight champion of the world and he reconfirmed his abilities when he knocked out Liston in the first round of their rematch in Lewiston, Maine on May 25, 1965.

One of my most fav bouts of his is: “The fight with FOREMAN, held in Zaire – The Rumble in the Jungle.’’ on October 30, 1974.

alirumble

His talents and skills can be surpassed only by the power of his heart.

His love for the less fortunate, his strong beliefs on color and racism – where he said “Hating people because of their color is wrong, it does not matter which color does the hating. It’s just plain wrong’’.

Muhammad Ali is a true legend and a hero forever who will till eternity inspire millions to pursue their dreams and make that IMPACT truly positive.

The leaders of a team and his team mates racing on the Tour de France try to excel, individually or by the support they provide to their team. The Tour de France 2009

Individual times to finish each stage are added up to determine the overall winner at the end of the race. The rider with the lowest aggregate time at the end of each day wears a yellow jersey.

The course changes every year but it has always finished in Paris and since 1975 along the Champs-Élysées.

It typically has 21 days, or stages, of racing and covers not more than 3,500 kilometres (2,200 mi).[2] The shortest Tour was in 1904 at 2,420 kilometres (1,500 mi), the longest in 1926 at 5,745 kilometres (3,570 mi).

The number of teams usually varies between 20 to 22, with nine riders in each. Entry is by invitation to teams chosen by the race organiser, the Amaury Sport Organisation. Team members help each other and are followed by managers and mechanics in cars first Tour de France was staged in 1903.

Riders aim to win overall but there are three further competitions: points, mountains and for the best young rider. The leader of each wears a distinctive jersey.

The maillot jaune (yellow jersey) is worn by the general classification leader. The winner of the first Tour wore not a yellow jersey but a green armband.

The maillot vert (green jersey) is awarded for sprint points. At the end of each stage, points are earned by the riders who finish first, second, etc

The Points and more:

Flat stages: 35, 30, 26, 24, 22, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points are awarded to the first 25 riders across the

Young Talents – Aditya K – Ropes Course

I wriggled into my harness as the instructor told me how to squeeze into the chest harness piece of equipment to make sure that you don’t fall of the ropes. The letter informing us about the course had come about a week ago.

The ropes were a chain of obstacle courses that were around 30 meters off the ground. It was Monday 14th January 2008. I felt bored as I watched my friends who were now high up struggle to stay in control. I smiled to myself, being too sure that I would be much better than them. But as I saw my pals struggle with the course even more, I wondered if I could really do it easily.

My question was answered when it was my turn to go up. I climbed up a rod sort of thing that looked like a telegraph pole. I picked up a pattern on the way my arms and legs should climb once I was halfway up. Left arm! Right arm! Left leg! Right leg! I tried to concentrate and realized that it was extremely complicated after all. After I reached the top, I was praised by Jackie who was part of the staff. I was later tied to a sling and let out in the towering and complex ropes course.

The first obstacle that I had to battle first was tricky. I had to walk on a skinny wire and hold on to two other bony chains for support. After completing the first challenge, I congratulated myself on being successful to complete it. Only after congratulating myself, I looked at the obstacle in front of me. According to everyone who had already finished the course, that was the easiest of all.

The next obstacle was a large, circular beam that was above around 30 meters above the ground. I made my first mistake when I looked down. The height sent a shudder through my spine. Clutching on to my harness and taking a deep breath, I began to try and balance. I forced my eyes not to look down again. I had to be very tolerant with my buddies because they were yelling and screaming encouragements but what they didn’t know was that their cries from down below were just distracting me. While I was thinking all this, I didn’t realize that I had already nearly finished the beam. The bar made me feel like I was walking the plank.

The next obstacle was my favourite. There were two sleek wires: one for my foot and one for my hand. After completing it, I came to the hardest one. I had to walk on a wire that was about as thin as the thickness of a $1 coin. There was nothing I could hold on to all the time, as there were ropes every now and again. I did fall of a few times but got saved by my faithful harness. Finishing that took me around two minutes but it felt like two hours.

I had finished it! I had conquered the ropes course! Coming down was fun as I could jump down from the whole 30 meters but we had a rope attached onto us that a staff person was controlling so it was okay. After completing the whole obstacle course, we got to have our break.

The next was the low ropes in which we got to play a game called “ruthless”. The rules of the games are that you have to wander around when the referee calls a number. You have to get into groups of that number in order to stay in the next round. Whoever does not manage to make it into a group has to go out. After playing a few suspenseful rounds of the game, we hopped onto the ropes. Our objective was to swing like Tarzan from on side to the other. After practising, we played a game called “around the clock”. The rules were that we had to use the rope and swing onto the next mat as there were four mats set out that represented: twelve ‘o’ clock, three ‘o’ clock, six ‘o’ clock and last, but not least, nine ’o’ clock. If you were in the mat representing twelve ‘o’ clock, you would have to jump onto the mat representing three ’o’ clock and so on. We had ten lives to start off with and we lost a life if any of us touched the grass, the rocks or the ground.

The games were very interesting and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I just loved the ropes course. Roped in……….

Thanks

IPL 2008, Team management, the Royal Treat

Posted by Author | Posted in Businessman, career, creative, faith, fitness, Health, Wellness & Prosperity - Living, India, life, people, shopping, success, travel, world | Posted on 02-06-2008

IPL

Team Management Win’s it all!

Being a true Mumbaite, there are only two things that I greedily crave for. One is Vada Pav and the other is the pulse racing game of Cricket.

About 7 weeks ago, I became a great fan of Mr. Lalit Modi who gifted all of us a fantastic product (though said to be ripped off from the Football leagues – Who cares?), the IPL – Indian Premiere League.

A product wherein you get the best from every nation.

It’s like having a Macintosh design (Beautifully packed) on a IBM machine (Brand sells) with windows OS (Love it or hate it… but you can’t ignore it – Everyone owns it)

The IPL brought in adrenaline rushing pulsating anticipation and anxiety to the young and senior players of Cricket as much as it did for the “dumb / struck” audience watching one of the best marketing practices sold right at their face.

And the best part is… the majority bought it and why wouldn’t we? It was a fantastic product with amazingly surprising ingredients, fresh recipe with a dash of rules being cooked in a cauldron of magical glamour.

It had it all and today at the DY Patil stadium at Navi Mumbai where the Underdogs finally did it and Rajasthan Royals bathed in pure glory.

They did it on the grandest stage of them all and with panache and flair. Raw overdue talent like Yusuf Pathan and Tanvir, fabulous findings like Asnodkar and pure all round skill like Shane Watson with the legend like backing and faith of Shane Warne, the match ended gloriously.

As the Chennai Super Kings skipper and his team gave a fabulous fight till the last ball was bowled, the Rajasthan Royals devoured the final ball for the ultimate prize of Glory and of course around 4.8 Crores Rupees.

But everyone loved it and the way the Royals had played it throughout, even the Chennai skipper wouldn’t have ‘minded it’ this time.

It was a great blow to all those who did not believe and kept saying with utmost faith that the underdogs will remain underdogs as they finally watched the most economical team biting the biggest chunk of them all, the biggest prize of them all the worlds most expensive Trophy – The IPL trophy.

More important than the combination of all sorts of skill levels was the beauty to see Muralidharan happy on Jayasurya’s wicket, Sachin rejoicing at Dhoni’s dismissal, Sourav hugging Shoaib and the Aussie Watson as glad with hitting Symond’s ball like never seen before, was that it brought in a lot of team spirit and a never give up attitude amongst all who played and to many who even just watched.

It was a great lesson from Shane Warne’s team that, it is not as important to have the best in the team as it is to give your best to the team.

I would like to end it with just a simple kudos for the legendary performance by the retired Skipper Shane Warne for his team management and to the whole Rajasthan Royals for the consistent performance by adding so much zest and energy to the spirit of the game.

Three cheers to the fact and power behind ‘Team Management’ and a Huge Hurray to Mr.Modi, Mr. Warne and the Rajasthan Royals.

IPL rocked!!!

Be well
