Simple tips to keep your PC or Laptop in prime condition

Tips To Keep Your PC/Laptop in Prime Condition

Do you feel that your PC has slowed down quite a bit? Multiple tasks take longer to finish? Your search’s take a lot more time than it used to? Start-up & shutdown are slower than before? Well, this post will hopefully help you to speed up your PC and reduce some heartburn.

simple tips to keep your pc laptop clean

Cleanup Temporary Files:

Our first stop is the temp folder. Type “%temp%” (without quotes) in run command or if you are using Windows 7, directly in the search bar in the Start menu. Delete all files contained in this folder. You might get a message that a few files are in use by the system and can’t be deleted. Let them be.

 Cleanup the Prefetch Folder:

This is another folder that is often ignored. You will have to type “prefetch” in the run command to bring up this folder. Delete all files inside this folder as well.

 Recycle Bin:

This is an often ignored area, but which can hog a lot of disk space. Check and clean your recycle bin periodically.

Uninstall unwanted programs:

If you don’t use any programs, or don’t recognize any programs, or if you feel that an installed program is suspicious, do not hesitate to uninstall it. This frees up a lot of space on your system drive and also reduces disk clutter. Be sure to remove any unwanted tool bars that attach themselves to your browser and make your browsing experience a pain.

Defragment your Hard Drive:

We install and uninstall programs all the time. Sometimes the uninstall procedure does not take place properly, leading to incomplete file entries in the registry or incomplete files in the hard disk itself.  Defragmenting your hard drive can remove those clogs & re-allocate the space used by different programs. In layman’s language, the system sorts and organises the programs leading to efficient disk usage. This can be done via the built in Disk defragmenter. Or you could download any other free software’s as well. Auslogics Disk Defragmenter is a very good option that allows you to pause and resume your operations.

 Registry Cleaning:

Even though you might have uninstalled the programs, the entries in the registry might need some cleaning. Ccleaner is a fantastic app that can help you out here.

 Run an Anti virus scan:

Running an antivirus scan can help you to remove any malware or spam ware that might be slowing your system down.

 Re-install OS:

If you still feel, that all these steps could not regurgitate the vigor that your system once had, you might just have to nuke it. Reinstalling the Operating System gives you a fresh start and is an almost sure fire way to give your computer a shot in the arm. Do make sure that you have backed up your data!

If you do not have the patience to go through all these steps and want a one stop solution, and are also ready to shell out a few bucks, there are lot of software suites available which can automate these tasks for you. Tune up utilities, Auslogics Boostspeed are paid whereas Glary Utilities is freeware.

Please note that these are not standardized processes but just my views to try resolving simple problems on your own.

Do you have any tips that you want to share with us? Please do so in the comments section below.

Hope these tips help you to revive your system from the deep slumber it might be in.

Ciao.

Ravi
