Facebook adds voice calling

Facebook had launched a beta feature in its iOS messenger app last month, which allowed users to send voice messages to each other. Now in another significant update, it has reportedly added the option to make voice calls via the Facebook mobile app.

This feature was available to the Facebook Messenger app but s now featured in the main Facebook app as well. The only hitch is that again this feature is as of now limited to users in US and Canada only. The call is placed over WiFi or the users data connection, so users with a limited data plan might need to be careful. The voice calling option can be accessed by going to the right hand side slide out menu and tapping on a friends to bring up the contact info screen. Then tap the small “i” at the top right corner of the screen. If the user is online, you will be able to place a free call to them, else the button will be grayed out. Also, all users need to be on the latest version of the app or the button will still be grayed out.

Currently all Facebook iOS and Android apps support the feature to send short voice messages only. This new feature will allows users to save on their phone minutes and even help them place calls to people not in the same state as them. This will result in a significant amount of savings. Voice calling will probably be rolled out to users on Android and across all geographical areas once Facebook finishes its beta testing. This will definitely be very useful as mobile users have increased tremendously and a majority of these users access Facebook through its app.

Are you excited to try out this new feature? Will this prompt you to stop using Skype, Viber or other alternatives? Let us know in the comments below.

Download the Facebook App from the iOS app store.
