Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Ice Cream Sandwich

Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Ice Cream Sandwich

The most delicious offering from Google after Gingerbread, is its successor Ice Cream Sandwich which comes packed in the foil of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. This yummy delight has had geeks & other tech enthusiasts drooling over its features ever since it was unveiled in mid October last year. Why? Keep reading.

The Galaxy Nexus is the first phone which comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This is the upgrade which promises to end the fragmentation (so as to have uniform OS versions across all your devices) on mobiles and tablets and unify them together.

First the phone: Samsung has surprisingly given the Nexus an understated design, which some may like, others might frown upon. The 4.65” Super AMOLED display with HD resolution should however blow your doubts out of the water. Also the back cover has been coated with a material called as “Hyper Skin” which helps to prevent accidental drops. The phone is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual core Cortex A9 processor inside its TI OMAP 4460 chipset. While this is not as powerful as, say a Galaxy SII, it gets the job done. The phone also incorporates a “Near Field Communication” chip which means, you could use your phone as a credit card to make payments, use it to exchange information with another phone, or just obtain some info by scanning it over a poster which has an RF tag embedded in it. In a radical new move, which just might set a new trend in Android phone design, the hardware buttons at the bottom have been done away with. They have been replaced with three virtual keys which change orientation and function as per the demand. What this actually means is more screen real estate leaving you with more space on the screen for apps, movies, the possibilities are endless.

Next, the OS: The main selling feature of the Galaxy Nexus is undoubtedly Ice Cream Sandwich. Google has reworked it from the base up to give you a more intuitive and classy interface. They created a whole new font called “roboto” which they have described as “modern, yet approachable” and “emotional”. They have given it a lot of deep thought as you can see. The unlock screen has been reworked as well. The lock screen from Honeycomb has been modified a little bit. Other than unlocking the screen, you can also activate the camera. And who can forget face unlock, the ability to unlock your phone by scanning your face with the front cam.

Everything about ICS says ease of use. If you get a call that you don’t want to attend, instead of just rejecting it, you can also send a pre-defined sms saying that you are in a meeting. A lot of features that would require 3rd party apps have been incorporated inside. Data counters to throttle internet usage, a movie and photo editor, in built document viewers etc. The camera is only a 5MP shooter, but it allows 1080p recording and the 1.3MP front cam allows for 720p recording. There is no shutter lag, keep capturing pictures as they happen.

The browser has also been reworked and is said to be super fast while loading pages. Running apps can be seen like in Honeycomb, but you now have the added power of swiping a thumbnail to end that app. This swipe feature is incorporated throughout the OS including the notification bar.

This is not to say the phone is without any chinks in its armour. There is no FM radio and there is no microSD card slot. These are not deal breakers as such since the phone comes with 16/32 GB storage. All in all the Galaxy Nexus is one benchmark in terms of design and OS at least, which other device manufacturers will try to emulate.
