That’s right, this March 2011 we completed 4 successful years of corporate blogging for brands and organizations to meet their various goals and needs.  We began with reviews of books, websites, products, gadgets and over a period of 4 years added many other online marketing services for our clients such as product marketing, brand monitoring, search engine optimization (SEO), Press release (PR) services, keyword optimization, social media monitoring etc. (more about our Services ~ Click here)

We even conducted surveys for product launches planned, market analysis and ventured into the power of customer opinions with insights and in-depth analysis in the last 4 years.

As we moved across brands, industries and countries we realized that the potential of social media marketing and monitoring today can be utilized successfully BEYOND the ‘marketing’ industry division too for any corporation today.

PRESS evolving to ‘Press this’: In India

Press this

Press Evolution:Newspaper

By press in common parlance we usually refer to Printing press, but in journalistic & mass communication terminology, we mean print media such as newspapers, periodicals, magazines, news agencies, press syndicates and any such printed material.

The idea behind forming a press in terms of newspapers and similar related agencies has been to share public information, from the nation or the people themselves and create a powerful vehicle of expressions and information. Today, newspapers have evolved in terms of not only content but also the way it is presented to the mass across countries.

From the time of Maharajas (Kings) and before the period of Christ, we can see wall carvings, signs and stone art symbols across cultures and religions. Kings like Ashoka and Mughal emperors have made powerful use of these media for ages to keep the public informed and educated.

As wall carvings went to the next level of stone and sculptures with writings to newsletters  as manuscripts, the development of the printing press was gradually taking place. Soon enough India found its first official newspaper courtesy of James Augustus Hickey in the form of Bengal Gazette in the year 1780.

The first printing press was established in Mumbai in 1674, second in Madras and third in Calcutta in 1779. Hickey’s Bengal Gazette also known as the Calcutta General Advertiser began on 29th January 1780. It was described beautifully as a ‘weekly political and commercial paper open to all parties but influenced by none’

The first two decades of the 19th century saw rigid control of the Press by Lords Wellesley and Warren Hastings. In-spite of this, slowly the Indian readers were soon enough exposed to a very large number of printing houses in the form of newspapers and newsletters across Mumbai, Calcutta & Madras in the form of Darpan, Dig Darshan, Samachar, Friend of India etc.

During this period came the father of the Press industry revolution who raised the need, awareness and to give what the press very truly deserved, “the freedom of the press”, he was none other than Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

Soon enough there was established the first truly owned Indian newspaper by Gangadhar Bhattacharya which was also called as the Bengal Gazette. Rapid developments across languages soon evolved in the form of print press in Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Gujrati, Tamil, Malayalam, Assamese, Punjabi in the later part of 1850’s. As another decade moved in with the war of independence breaking in, the press became more prominent, more popular and a much needed power tool for information and education for people in general.

When we look into the advantages behind a newspaper and such other print media, even if there is low subscription or reach in terms of actual sale of the IP of newspapers, magazine, newsletters etc. the readership finally goes high. Especially in a country like India where there is still a huge number of people who are not literate, the news spreads in the form of sharing information from person to person. So the power of PRESS is a revolution on it’s own.

Over decades as the most famous and influential newspapers such as Bande Mataram, Kesari, Maratha, Free Press Journal, Madras Standard, Bombay Chronicle etc kept creating waves, so were prominent influencer’s like the great Mahatma Gandhi, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Kasturi Ranga Iyengar etc associations with it.

The support for this medium of education and information became larger than life. Soon enough the influence to influence increased with technology contributing and forming a major role into the digital revolution of information sharing.

Today with millions of users across globally, India ranks high amongst users of internet and stands 2nd across Asia and with more adding up every day.

One of the most popular forms of using press or print information across India today is through blogs and micro blogs. No wonder we find more and more newspapers and magazines going ‘online’ and being a part of the larger revolution of the ‘spot content generation & sharing era’.

Today press has taken a larger role of not only entertaining and educating but also of rapidly evolving with the passage of time. We will soon be seeing a lot more of micro blogging platforms and blogs presenting the power of Press to us.

So till then, press this, share and keep evolving & learning!

Why Speed Reading?

Information, today, is pure POWER in our hands.

With so much of data out there, both online and offline we have reached a point in our lives what we can term as “information overload“.

Speed reading technique helps one to read with discipline a lot faster with good retention.

For whom?

This is very helpful for both children and adults.

It’s thus a great resource and technique for school goers, college students or working students.

How did I come across this technique?

It was purely a desperate need for me.

There was a time when I had to keep up with my studies in my management school, had to establish understanding simultaneously of the company product policies and guidelines where I was also doing my internship, plus I was habituated to reading a novel just to keep my head from spinning and to soothe my brain, with a good book at the end of the day.

I just wanted it all!

Simply put, the idea in my head was not just to clear the exams and get the job for the day done, but to understand and implement what I had learned in my class and put it to practical use at work.

This needed a good understanding of what I was reading & also good retention. This was something that most of us would face or would have faced at times.

What happened?

I cracked and I just couldn’t, it was……… It was well, pure “information overload” for me.

That’s when I came across this technique of “Speed ‘QualityReading” and it helped me a lot.

So, I thought I would share some simple techniques that you may find useful even in your routine.

What does speed reading do?

Many a things; “TIME is Money”

  • To start with, you can learn to read specific & important part of information more quickly.
  • You may also get a better understanding of it with a disciplined practice.
  • It helps one to even learn foreign languages quickly
  • Today for anything and everything we just Google it online for work, fun & for learning, this technique will help us get the information quicker and only that which is practically useful.

There are lots of methods:

I am giving below few simple steps that you can follow and scan through all that Social media sites, search engines and digital content available that would add value to you & assist you in making your lives richer, more interactive and resourceful.

7 Simple steps that could help you in “Speed Quality reading”:

Use this technique in quiet places to start with. Eventually with practice you will be able to quality speed read even amidst noise around

  1. Skim through your book / content / text (Skimming is visually searching the sentences of a page for clues to meaning) – You can also look for Headlines, Titles, Sub titles, text with bold, italics, underlines etc in the page first and put them together. It helps you to get a gist of the text or content immediately.
  2. Use the Meta guiding technique. Use your index finger or mouse pointer or a pen, in order for the eye to move faster along the length of a passage of text. This reading dynamics system centers     on moving one’s hand across the page in order to maintain eye focus on the words. It helps to read      without getting distracted.
  3. Do not Read out aloud or sub-vocalize the words, instead associate with visuals. US Air force research shows you can recognize words in less than 5/100th of second while sounding it will consume more than twice that time.
  4. Slowly, increase speed in which you move your hands / finger pen etc and adapt to the speed
  5. Do not repeat and slowly learn to skip words like “as, and, it, then, if” etc
  6. If you are reading online or on a computer, try highlighting the text and reading it as reading white text on a dark background is easier than the reverse.
  7. Start with books / magazines where there are variations in fonts and types and then you can enter into textbook & other material reading slowly.

These are some really simple techniques that have helped me, hope you find it useful too.

Only TIME will tell….

changing time

I believe in dreams…. I work towards a probable destiny but yet, the concept of the TIME god scares the living hell out of me… I am just another ordinary guy scurrying around in the rat race of life.

Travel has taught me more about life and people than any formal education could ever have. I find myself surrounded by millions of my rodent friends each trying to grab a piece of their share of the cheese everyday.

Failure has never scared or pulled me back as some power greater than all beings has been generous enough to grant me the ability to bounce back every time till date. I have been told not to think too much as all we need is to keep doing our part of the routine and not worry about what’s in store.

The probability of failure has never impeded me as an area of concern but what I did and all that I could have done makes me feel the pulse of the kicking prey on the crafty spider’s web at all times.

My idea of travel is not just to make a livelihood. In the process, I learn so much from all that is superior and great and observe and comprehend the don’ts from around, that travel has a larger count to my daily learning.

I was at RIE Mysore this whole week.

The sheer simplicity of the place humbled me to the core in the sense that right from the passionate research and innovation of culture, learning and customs that happens over there by the masters shrinks down the egotism of the self.

This place had just the most basic needs to stay and the most necessary things to Live. It has knowledge and information to the core, depending on how and how much you can take and share.

My daily count of learning has helped me enhance my knowledge of life, people and processes so much that the thirst to act on it has only increased manifold over the years. Hence the fiery desire to perform and contribute seems to be doubling everyday within me. Life has taught me over the years that the maturity to deal with things is more important than the ability to resolve.

TIME has taught me from Life and observation that there is none powerful than TIME itself. All we possess are the skills and passion to grow and let grow and if that seems to be missing, I guess its time to let go.

I seem to now understand why real education and actual learning are of prime importance today as they embed values more than anything else and empower us with the ability to fight, shield, defend and emerge from our daily actions.

But when it all ends…. Will we be known for what we did or would we be remembered for the change we brought ….. I guess… Only TIME will tell….

Till then… keep learning and keep growing…

Be Well
