Twitter has made a few changes to its desktop site to improve the image and video viewing experience.  Now whenever you click on images on profile pages or in search results, the images will pop up in a separate larger window on the same page. No more will users need to navigate to a separate page and wait for the image to load.

This feature extends to videos as well. So videos from YouTube, Vimeo, other partners whose videos appear in expanded tweets and Twitters own newly launched Vine app will show up in a large media gallery as well. Enhancements were not limited to rich content like photos and videos only. Tweet pages will now show longer twitter conversations too.

While Twitter is all about micro blogging and 140 characters, their focus on enhancing photo and video viewing functionality shows that they are also focussed on other rich content which will result in better engagement among users. Reducing navigation among various pages will entice users to stay on the site longer and Twitter seems to be doing it right with the introduction of these media galleries.
