Punter and Schumacher bid goodbye, Flintoff starts afresh

The world of sports is going through some changes with two legends bidding adieu to their respective fields and another getting ready to start anew in one.

Ricky Ponting announced that he would draw the curtains on his 17 year career at the end of the third Test match against South Africa, which begins on Friday. “It’s a decision I thought long and hard about. At the end of the day, it was about my results and my output in this series so far,” said the Launceston-born batsman. “If you look back over the last 12 or 18 months, I haven’t been able to perform consistently.” said Ponting also fondly known as “Punter” analysing his recent performance on the field.

Ponting has been part of 108 test victoreis, the only cricketer to do so and has also led Australia to World Cup victories twice in 2003 and 2007. He is also the second highest scorer, after Sachin Tendulkar in Tests and One-Day Internationals.

Another legend announced his retirement as well, albeit in the world of Formula One Racing. Michael Schumacher who had come out of retirement once in 2010 is ready to bid a final goodbye to the sport again at the Brazilian GP. “I will take the best out of it and enjoy it as much as I can,” he said of his final race.  Schumacher has a stellar career stats with most wins (91), pole positions (68), fastest laps (77) and most podium finishes (155). He is second in the numbers of races entered (307) behind former Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello.

While these two legends might have created a hollow space in their respective fields which might be hard to fill, Andrew Flintoff is getting ready to step into the ring for another round.

The former England cricketer was forced to retire at the age of 31 because of injuries, admitting that his body had beaten him. He turned quite a few heads earlier this year, when he announced that he would be pulling on boxing gloves to make a foray into the world of boxing. “I wanted to get back into professional sport at a time when I needed something. I was drifting,” Flintoff was quoted as saying by BBC. Flintoff will make his professional debut facing off against Richard Dawson of the United States.

Fake Facebook Privacy Notice goes Viral

Fake Facebook Privacy Notice goes Viral

Facebook recently sent out  a mail to users about its new privacy guidelines notifying that they would be allowed to comment on it, but not allowed to vote like last time. One of our team members got this mail as well, which you can view for yourself below.

Facebook privacy notice mail

While there is not much to be alarmed of in the mail, it has somehow triggered a fake privacy notice to go viral on Facebook. People have been sharing it and have been asking others to do the same as well in hopes of supposedly protecting one’s personal details and data from unauthorized copying. The text in the post reads as follows :

“In response to the new Facebook guidelines I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, paintings, professional photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention).

For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!

(Anyone reading this can copy this text and paste it on their Facebook Wall. This will place them under protection of copyright laws.)

By the present communiqué, I notify Facebook that it is strictly forbidden to disclose, copy, distribute, disseminate, or take any other action against me on the basis of this profile and/or its contents. The aforementioned prohibited actions also apply to employees, students, agents and/or any staff under Facebook’s direction or control. The content of this profile is private and confidential information. The violation of my privacy is punished by law (UCC 1 1-308-308 1-103 and the Rome Statute).
Facebook is now an open capital entity. All members are recommended to publish a notice like this, or if you prefer, you may copy and paste this version. If you do not publish a statement at least once, you will be tacitly allowing the use of elements such as your photos as well as the information contained in your profile status updates.”

To clear the air, posting any such text on your wall will not make any difference whatsoever. Facebook and all its users are still bound to the same terms and conditions that are accepted by users when they sign up for the service.  A Facebook spokesperson released a statement disproving such rumors as well.

“As outlined in our terms, the people who use Facebook own all of the content and information they post on Facebook, and they can control how it is shared through their privacy and application settings.

“Over the last few years, we have noticed some statements that suggest otherwise and we wanted to take a moment to remind you of the facts – when you post things like photos to Facebook, we do not own them. Under our terms [https://www.facebook.com/legal/terms], you grant Facebook permission to use, distribute, and share the things you post, subject to the terms and applicable privacy settings. For example, if you upload a photo and share it with your friends, we’ll make that photo available and distribute it to your friends. And, when you delete a photo, we delete it too.”
