Facebook introduces Graph Search tool

Facebook has announced a search tool for its site called as “Graph Search“. This feature is still in beta and you need to sign up and wait before you get to use it. But its features can be seen in a short video that demonstrates its capabilities and Mark Zuckerberg and other employees of Facebook explain a bit about it too.

Until now searching for anything in the Facebook search bar would return results to pages or people which might be what you would have been looking for or way off the mark. It was not intelligent nor could it analyse your likes to return accurate data. Graph Search seeks to change all this. You could put in a search for friends from your native place and the Graph Search algorithm would give you accurate answers. Graph Search will make use of your likes, profile data and other information tied to your Facebook account to give a very close estimate or perfect answer to your query. You could enter queries like “friends born in 1990” or “friends in my firm who like chess”. Graph Search will cross reference all the data and show up those friends who have added chess to their interests or have 1990 as their birth year.

Graph Search by Facebook

Currently the feature is focused only on People, photos and interests but it will probably pull in a lot more of your data as it evolves. This could be one more reason to go through your privacy settings and streamline your profile or news feed. Facebook has released a video outlining what will be visible when using Graph Search. You can have a look at it below. You can also read more about how privacy works with Graph Search here.

Graph search will basically use a set of filters to sift through interests, locations, relationship statuses and the like to deliver results. You can sign up for Graph search here.
