Google announces Mapathon to create better maps for India

Maps for Google

Google has announced Mapathon 2013 for the residents of India in a bid to create better Maps. This is essentially an effort to crowd source the mapping process in order to improve the quality of their maps.

Mapathon 2013 is a competition which will commence from February 12 and end on March 25, 2013. This mapping contest asks users from all around India to add information about their neighborhood to Google Maps making use of the “Google Map Maker” tool. This simple tool will allow users to add information about their area based on their local knowledge of the place. Once the information has been saved and submitted, it will be verified by Google before it is added to the map.

Google will also reward you for all your efforts. The top 1000 mappers in India stand a chance to win Android tablets, smartphones, gift vouchers and Google merchandise. You can register for the competition here.

Google knows that local residents know better about their localities than representatives that they may send for mapping purposes and Mapathon 2013 is a brilliant initiative by them to tap this potential. You can know more about Mapathon 2013 by clicking on the following links.
