Foursquare updates Android app with new UI & layout

Foursquare Android app

Foursquare has updated their mobile app for Android with some big changes to the UI and layout. The update is focused around three main changes as listed below.

Foursquare Explore

The first major change is to the “Explore” tab. It can now be found via a persistent search bar at the top of the app. You can tap and input a search option for food, hotels or search by the provided categories. Alternatively, you can also tap on “Best Nearby” to discover interesting places around you.

Foursquare Map

The second major change you will find as soon as you open the app is the map at the top. Tap on this map to expand  it and explore other places nearby or find your Foursquare friends who might have checked in close by. You can zoom in or out and explore the map to find suggestions for places based on your interests.

Foursquare Menu

Finally, users will no more have to swipe through the app as all options have been consolidated in a drawer which can be revealed by clicking on the Menu button on the top left of the screen. You can access your profile, edit your lists and change your setting easily from this drawer. Apart from these changes, one other major change is that the “Check-In” button which used to reside in the top right of the screen has been moved to its diagonally opposite corner. This button is now situated at the bottom left corner of the app.

These updates will be rolled out to all users in the following weeks. Foursquare is promising more updates on its blog including an even better personalized map on the home screen. Overall this update promises smoother search, easy maneuverability, the ability to quickly  find friends and consolidated settings among others. What are your first impressions about this update? Google Plus renames Circles as Find Friends

Google Plus updates Circles feature

Google Plus Find Friends

Google Plus has rechristened the Circles tab as “Find Friends” in a new update. This update makes it easier for users to connect with people they have communicated with, who might not be on Google Plus.

As you can see in the image above, the Circles feature has been renamed as “Find Friends”. Clicking on it lists friends suggestions based on people in your circles and other information filled in your profile. On the right hand side is a small list which will help you to add contacts from Gmail, your workplace or place of education that you have listed in your bio. Apart from Gmail, Google Plus will also list other people with whom you have interacted using any of Google’s services. The Circles feature is still available at the top of the page. It is labelled as “Your circles”. You can still organize and add people to different circles with the circle editor. It is now easier to import contacts from other email accounts as well. This is probably a push to bring more people into Google Plus.

Other minor updates include the ability to download images from events albums. When attending an event, Google Plus smartly captures all photos contributed by users into one consolidated album. After the event is over, you can now grab all the photos that you and other event attendees have contributed by clicking the “Actions” button and selecting “Download event photos”.

The app ribbon on the left hand side of the screen can now be organized as per your interests too. You can just drag the icons to the top or bottom as per your requirement.

With so many small but useful updates, Google Plus sure is making considerable leaps and bounds to solidify its fan base. What other features would you like to see in Google Plus? Share your views in the comments below.
