Google announces Mapathon to create better maps for India

Maps for Google

Google has announced Mapathon 2013 for the residents of India in a bid to create better Maps. This is essentially an effort to crowd source the mapping process in order to improve the quality of their maps.

Mapathon 2013 is a competition which will commence from February 12 and end on March 25, 2013. This mapping contest asks users from all around India to add information about their neighborhood to Google Maps making use of the “Google Map Maker” tool. This simple tool will allow users to add information about their area based on their local knowledge of the place. Once the information has been saved and submitted, it will be verified by Google before it is added to the map.

Google will also reward you for all your efforts. The top 1000 mappers in India stand a chance to win Android tablets, smartphones, gift vouchers and Google merchandise. You can register for the competition here.

Google knows that local residents know better about their localities than representatives that they may send for mapping purposes and Mapathon 2013 is a brilliant initiative by them to tap this potential. You can know more about Mapathon 2013 by clicking on the following links.

Twitter pushes update for mobile apps and mobile web

Twitter mobile app

Twitter is not focused on updating its desktop site only, it has now pushed out updates to its mobile apps as well. After launching its Vine app, Twitter has turned its attention back to its core Android and iOS apps.

This new update aims to consolidate the content in each of its tabs, making searching for content a lot more easier. The “Discover” tab now shows Tweets, Activity, Trends and suggestions of accounts to follow, all in one single stream. No longer do you have to scroll endlessly to find the group that you want. “Activity” and “Trends” are represented as two separate tiles with previews at the top of the Discover page.

Search results now show the most relevant Tweets, Photos and accounts all in one stream similar to the new Discover tab. Twitter for iPhone users now get a search button next to the compose Tweet button, allowing you to search from anywhere in the app. This feature was already present in the Android version. The “Connect” tab now shows “Interactions” as the default view listing new followers, retweets and mentions. This can be changed back to display only your  “mentions” in the settings menu. Finally, clicking on a link in any Tweet will redirect you to the website instantly. Previously, the tweet expanded and then you had to click on the link once again increasing the time required to reach the content.

These updates while not too major are things that will make the mobile experience for lots of users really worthwhile. Also Twitter has a really strong base of mobile users who will appreciate these redesigns at making the Twitter mobile experience less tiresome and redundant and more faster and useful instead.
